The Squash Academy

We are excited to once again offer high-performance programming opportunities to committed junior squash players in the New York and Tri-State communities. Led by Squash Academy Director, Simba Muhwati, our program helps junior athletes improve the technical, tactical, physical, and mental aspects of their game, enabling players to compete at the highest levels in the junior and collegiate squash circuits.

PROGRAMMING

 

Private Lessons

Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 6:00 PM-9:00 PM (weekends by appointment). Private lessons focus on squash technique with an emphasis on ball striking, movement, and developing a well-rounded squash mindset.

Private lessons range in price by Academy coach and run for 45 minutes per lesson:

Pay-to-Play

Both Academy and non-Academy players are welcome to reserve court time in Harlem! Reservations are currently limited to two players per court. Reservations cost $30 per court, and are offered for both 45 minutes and 60 minutes (depending on time of day). Courts close at 8:00 PM.

Fall 2021 Clinics

 

Community Squash Clinics

Wednesdays from 6:00 PM-7:00 PM. Community Squash Clinics are designed for players new to the sport of squash who are in search of instruction around fundamentals, set in a fun and engaging environment. Athletes enrolled in this clinic are encouraged to attend the Junior Box League.

Community Squash Clinics cost $25 and run for 60 minutes.

 

Intermediate Clinics

Tuesdays/Thursdays from 6:00 PM-7:30 PM, and Saturdays from 2:00 PM-3:30 PM. Intermediate Clinics are designed for players with a skill level of 3.5-4.5. These moderate-intensity group sessions incorporate drills and matchplay scenarios that mimic tournament conditions. These sessions run simultaneously with Performance Clinics, which offers emerging athletes a thriving squash environment.

Intermediate Clinics cost $125 (drop-in rate) and run for 90 minutes. Limited to 16 players per clinic – spots still available.

 

Performance Clinics

Tuesdays/Thursdays from 6:00 PM-7:30 PM, and Saturdays from 2:00 PM-3:30 PM. Performance Clinics are designed for players with a skill level of 4.5 or higher. These high-intensity group sessions incorporate drills and matchplay scenarios that mimic tournament conditions. Adrian Grant and other college-level players provide on-court guidance during these clinics.

Performance Clinics cost $125 (drop-in rate) and run for 90 minutes. Limited to 16 players per clinic – spots still available.

 

LEAGUES, TOURNAMENTS, & EVENTS

 

Junior Box League

Sundays from 10:00 AM-11:30 AM. The Junior Box League is a great opportunity for students to play competitive matches against players at their skill level. Matchplay sessions run for four weeks at a time – upon completion of each box, players shift boxes according to current placements. The Academy’s Junior Box League exposes athletes to new opponents of different ages and genders in a fun, low-pressure environment.

The Junior Box League costs $50 per session, and sessions run for 60 minutes.

Women’s Squash Week (9/19-9/26)

Join The Squash Academy and StreetSquash in celebration of Women’s Squash Week! Events are open to all girls, women, and female-identifying players – all levels welcome.

  • Sunday, 9/19 @ 10:00 AM-12:00 PM
  • Wednesday, 9/22 @ 6:00 PM-8:00 PM

These community sessions will feature squash 101, match play, and plenty of good times! Mask usage and full vaccination against Covid-19 are required for all attendees. Contact katiria@streetsquash.org with questions.

COVID-19 PROTOCOLS

Safety is our top priority.

Beginning Wednesday, September 1st, all vaccine-eligible Academy players will be required to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19, and to provide proof of vaccination prior to participating in Academy programming.

Our team has worked hard to enhance our facility and operations in compliance with leading Covid-19 research. Our Covid-19 protocols were created by Academy employees in partnership with trusted healthcare professionals in New York City.

Updates to our facility include:

  • All Academy coaches are fully vaccinated and receive Covid-19 testing twice weekly
  • Upgraded MERV-13 HVAC system and portable air purifiers
  • Court sanitizing between all training sessions
  • Mandatory mask and face shield wearing
  • Contactless check-in and check-out
  • Health screening for all individuals who enter our facility
  • Hand sanitizer stations at each court and throughout our facility

ABOUT THE SQUASH ACADEMY & STREETSQUASH

Although a separate venture, The Squash Academy supports StreetSquash programming and participants in a number of important ways:

  • Financial Support – funds raised through The Squash Academy contribute to and improve StreetSquash’s ability to finance new and better programming opportunities for participants.
  • Squash Instruction – a select number of StreetSquash participants join The Squash Academy for additional squash instruction and time on court.
  • Community-Building – The Squash Academy brings a new demographic of squash players and community members through StreetSquash’s doors, creating new relationship-building and stewardship opportunities.

What is The Squash Academy @StreetSquash?

The Squash Academy is an elite training program for committed junior squash players, designed to elevate an athlete’s game through intensive training and coaching.

Led by Academy Director, Simba Muhwati, and his team of coaches, dedicated participants will improve the technical, tactical, physical, and mental aspects of their game. We believe that this approach enables athletes to compete at the highest levels of the junior and collegiate squash circuits.

Who can participate in The Squash Academy?

The Squash Academy is open to all juniors athletes, ages 10-18. We hope to connect with junior athletes who are competitive tournament players and/or have aspirations of participating on the US Junior squash circuit.

When does The Squash Academy operate?

Training sessions operate from 6:00 PM-9:00 PM on weekdays. Weekend programming hours update seasonally.

Times are subject to change as we continue to expand Academy programming. To discuss scheduling a training opportunity outside of our current operating hours, contact academy@streetsquash.org.

Can my payment to The Squash Academy be considered a tax-deductible contribution to StreetSquash?

Since you are receiving a service for your payment, fees cannot be considered a charitable contribution.

You are, of course, welcome to make a tax-deductible contribution to StreetSquash directly, separate from payments made to The Squash Academy. You can make a tax-deductible donation to StreetSquash programming here.

Can adults participate in The Squash Academy?

Currently, The Squash Academy is open to junior players only. We may look to introduce adult programming in the future – please contact academy@streetsquash.org if you are interested in this offering! 

In the meantime, squash players of all ages are welcome to reserve court time at our facility.

 

Can anyone book courts to practice or play at StreetSquash?

Yes! Courts are available for reservation around existing Academy and StreetSquash programming. Reservations are currently limited to two players per court. Reservations cost $30 for 45 minutes of court time – please contact academy@streetsquash.org to reserve a court.

Does my child have to join The Squash Academy to participate in drop-in clinics?

The Academy is not currently offering a drop-in option for training sessions. When that option becomes available once again, players are not required to be a part of The Academy to participate in drop-ins.
